Have you looked into the "Combined" view in iStat Menu? You can pick one item to display and then put the rest under it in a menu. It's not a big deal on my MacPro with 3x30" monitors, but it is a trade off on my 11" Air. I want information at a glance, I don't want to switch to the dashboard to see it.

No, I feel lost on a Mac without iStats Menu. *edit* Also am I the only one who prefers iStats Menu compared to the widgets? I get all my information from the computer monitors in front of me. I'm one of those weird people that isn't glued to their iPhone / iPad, those stay in the work bag or on the end table. I still think its pretty stagnant, but I definitely use it. Countdown Timer, more of "X days until Y" thing, I use it for fun events and to keep myself excited for things. Sticky Notes, for minecraft co-ordinates and other things Weather Network temperature widget, because I live in Canada and like "The Weather Network", not or yahoo weather Cooking timer, because my microwave timer is quiet and I don't carry my iPhone around the house with me. Clock, because the system click is small and I can't read it easily if I'm just running away from my desk Xbox Live Gamertag for checking friends gamescores / avatars at a quick glance (for fun) Delivery Status, for checking shipments I'm going to greybeard it up and say Yes! I use widgets For some reason I always get confused, so have just gotten into the habit of checking before I call. So sometimes its a two hour difference and sometimes three. *My parents live in Arizona, which doesn't go on daylight savings time. The ability to type a Tweet into Notifications is hardly different than having a Twitter Widget on your Dashboard. Like how Notifications on iPhone includes a weather widget. The other thing that might revitalize widgets is to somehow integrate Dashboard/Widgets with the Notification Center.

I would bet most users never use it, a few use it a lot for all kinds of things, but a nice big chunk use it like I do - set up the widgets for the information you want, refer to those widgets relatively frequently, never download another widget again.īasically, I would miss Dashboard if it went away, but will probably never download another new widget again. It's totally useful, but not the kind of thing I'm dying to add features to. I use Dashboard a lot, but mostly just to check the weather or the time before I call my parents*. I have the Facebook widget but wouldn't really miss it if it went away.
I used to use a widget that showed my Netflix queue. I used to use it a lot back when it actually worked right.

For some reason Apple's movie widget works correctly about 25% of the time (can't seem to actually get a data from the server). I don't think I've ever used the search widget, even though it might be more efficient than starting up Safari to do a search. Nice to have quick access to a dictionary/thesaurus. I could never find a good stock quote widget that I liked. I have weather and a clock for each of three different locations (where I visit a lot because family members live). Widgets are great for a small subset of information. No mention of Notefile? I think it's far superior to Apple's solution of a Mac App dedicated to syncing Notes. And if they included iCloud support, more iOS apps could work in conjunction with companion Dashboard widgets.Įdit: Didn't realize Delivery Status was also JuneCloud. I think a Dashboard widget section of the Mac App Store would totally reinvigorate the Dashboard. I sincerely hope widgets get renewed support from Apple. Obviously spotlight could do a lot of this, but you can type in entire functions that are transcribed from the work you have up in your current desktop. It looks like a chalkboard, but you just type in math and it gives you answers. I would love it if you interviewed the Junecloud guys about it.Ĭalcboard is my other heavily used widget. This note will be in the Notefile app the next time I sync it. I often pull up the overlay and then type in a quick note about something I have up behind the dashboard.

The iOS app is similar to Apple's Notes, but instead of syncing with a full on app, it syncs with a Dashboard widget. Notefile is the single best implementation of widget and iOS app that I can think of.
I thought the whole point of it was easily glanceable information, for both the widgets, and the work you're doing behind it. First Off - having the Dashboard occupy its own space, instead of as an overlay, completely undermines its utility.
